Spontaneous Cures

Diseases, like accidents, do not come out of nowhere. Whether terminal or short-term, they too represent choices and are largely tailor-made from a person’s inner patterns. Nearly anything outside of birth defects can be cured if the beliefs and repressed material that settle into an illness are uncovered and changed. I am a big believer in the treacherous power of repression. Releasing it almost always involves penetrating the shame barrier touched on in chapter 7. In general, healing is normally a slow process of altering inner decisions and beliefs as a person searches out alternatives to death. Cure can also come about suddenly from a conversion experience if it is powerful enough to restructure those undesirable beliefs and dislodge repression, as NDEs often do. The wide-spectrum effectiveness of these deeply private experiences is thorough and lasting. Public conversions and charismatic healings in religio-spiritual venues occasionally produce cures. However, they often don’t last, or new ailments crop up, because the underlying problems remain unresolved.

If someone is not ready to die, almost anything can serve as an agent of recovery. I remember a little house near Bakersfield, California, where people gathered to pray in front of a shadow on the wall that resembled the classic image of the Virgin Mary. It was painfully easy to see that the shadow was caused by trees blocking the glow of outdoor Christmas lights. But those who gathered there empowered one another and so infused the air with hope and faith that some did have inexplicable improvements.

The dilemma of whether to maintain hope for a spontaneous cure or to capitulate to a terminal prognosis must be met case by case. On the one hand, waiting for a miracle may be playing into denial. On the other, a fixed belief in the inevitable fatality of a given condition works to preclude spontaneous reversals.
